The energy transition is a pathway toward transformation of the global energy sector from fossil-based to zero-carbon by the second half of this century. Further action are needed to reduce carbon emission and mitigate the effects of climate change. Renewable energy and energy efficiency measure can potentially achieve 90% of the required carbon reductions. The energy transition in all regions will be enabled by information technology, smart technology, policy frameworks and market instruments. ASEAN has set a target of 23% renewable energy in the region’s energy mix by 2025 which is an increase of 250% from 2014. The aims are for energy security, sustainable development and environment impact reduction. To achieve this target, Southeast Asia countries will have to significantly  accelerate their deployment of renewable energy in the power sector as well as in heating cooling and transportation.

With its huge potential in renewable energy, ASEAN faces becoming a renewable energy hub. Hence, technological innovations and favorable government policies are among the trends expected to drive ASEAN’s transition to renewable energy in the coming years. However, there are still 70 million ASEAN citizens without access to reliable electricity. The potentials for renewable energy are huge in those markets and government are increasingly turning to solar and wind energy to address these issues. Consumers are driving the green agenda forward and the entry of new funds into the ASEAN renewable energy market.

Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency (DEDE), Ministry of Energy, Thailand emphasizes on renewable energy promotion and investment in its country as well as in ASEAN Member States. Therefore, DEDE will conduct the “International Forum on Unlocking Investment Opportunities in Renewable energy for the ASEAN Region” to take action on this matter. This forum ultimate goal is to unlock the renewable energy investment opportunities through sharing of experience and business matching among the ASEAN investors, project developers, and policy makers. ASEAN successful renewable energy investment and transformative policies case will be highlighted. Obstacles and barriers on renewable energy investment and deployment will be thoroughly discussed to determine opportunities and way-forward on the aspects of financial mechanism, innovative technologies and renewable energy policy reformation. At the end of the forum, the participants will have the opportunity to further enhance their network with more information discussion through site visits to PV System at Central Plaza Nakhon Ratchasima and Wind Farm at Huay Bong, Dankhunthod Districts.
